Job description
The Radiology Assistant plays a central support role within Oakwood Medical’s Ultrasound and DXA services. Working in a scheduled-care environment, the Radiology Assistant coordinates daily clinics, offers chaperone support, ensures safe and efficient patient flow, and supports sonographers and radiographers in delivering high-quality, patient-centred diagnostic services.
The role has a strong focus on Infection Prevention & Control (IPC), Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), governance, and data protection compliance. The Radiology Assistant ensures clinics operate safely, efficiently, and in line with regulatory and organisational standards.
Services include general medical ultrasound, expanding early pregnancy and obstetrics services, and DXA scanning.

Job requirements
Key Responsibilities
Clinic Coordination & Patient Flow
Coordinate daily ultrasound and DXA clinics to ensure efficient workflow.
Liaise with the administrative team regarding scheduling, delays, and clinic-related issues.
Escalate operational or clinical concerns promptly to the Clinical Lead or appropriate personnel.
Support service expansion initiatives, including new obstetric ultrasound services.
Patient-Centred Care
Promote and consistently deliver a patient-centred approach in all interactions.
Verify patient identity and ensure all required documentation such as consent forms and infection control log books are completed.
Clearly explain procedures and provide reassurance, particularly to anxious or vulnerable patients.
Act as chaperone for intimate ultrasound examinations, ensuring dignity, privacy, and professional standards are upheld.
Assist with safe positioning and manual handling in accordance with training and policy.
Respond to and manage patient queries during clinics in a professional manner.
Clinical Support
Assist sonographers and radiographers in completing daily ultrasound and DXA worklists.
Prepare scanning rooms and ensure required equipment and consumables are available.
Follow probe decontamination protocols in line with IPC guidelines.
Maintain clinical environments to required hygiene and safety standards.
Identify and report equipment faults promptly.
Support safe opening and closing of the unit in accordance with operational procedures.
Phlebotomy support (if trained and required by service needs).
Infection Prevention, Health & Safety & Governance
Adhere to and ensure all Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) policies and protocols are followed by staff.
Ensure Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) standards are maintained within the clinical area.
Monitor clinical stock levels and manage replenishment of consumables.
Complete incident reporting on EcoOnline and support implementation of learning outcomes.
Ensure events, risks, or near-misses are escalated appropriately.
Maintain compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations.
Data Protection & Administration
Ensure full GDPR compliance in handling patient data.
Maintain accurate and confidential patient records across RIS/PACS and associated systems.
Scan and process referrals and update examination information in clinical systems.
Cross-Site & Service Support
Provide cross-cover services as required.
Support onboarding and training of new team members where appropriate.
Act as a resource for clinical systems where designated.
Desirable Qualifications & Training:
Manual Handling & People Moving
Basic Life Support (BLS)
Fire Safety
HSEland training (Hand Hygiene, GDPR Fundamentals, Open Disclosure, PPE, Children First)
Ultrasound Probe Decontamination Training
Phlebotomy Training (or willingness to undertake training)
Full training will be provided where required.
Hours: Hours to be discussed/agreed with Line Manager.
Location: The primary place of work will be Oakwood Medical Centre, Clonsilla.
In line with service requirements, the post holder may be required to work at alternative Oakwood or affiliated clinical sites, including:
The Coombe Hospital, Cork Street, Dublin 8
Sheehan Medical, Dun Laoghaire
Merrion Ultrasound Clinic, Dublin 2
Travel to these sites is expected to be infrequent and based on service requirements.
