Job role:

We are now recruiting for a new colleague to join our growing obstetrics team in Dublin 2 - the hours will be discussed with the successful candidate and can be flexible, either part time or full time.

This is a great opportunity for an Obstetrics/Midwife Sonographer who wants to take a step forward in their professional career with Medica Ireland. However, we are also open to training and upskilling the right candidate.

Job requirements

Qualifications:

  • Recognised postgraduate qualification in Ultrasound with a focus on Obstetrics and Gynaecology

  • Registration with CORU (Radiographers Registration Board) and/or on the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) relevant division, with annual compliance submitted via the Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC)

  • MSc in Ultrasound/Obstetrics and Gynaecology - desirable

 

Essential skills:

  • Post graduate experience in a wide range of ultrasound examinations relevant to post

  • Sound knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy and understanding of complex pathologies and fetal abnormalities

  • Excellent technical ability, being able to produce high quality images and interpret their relevance

  • Good organisational and time management skills

  • High level of self-motivation with willingness to learn and develop

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including accurate report writing and confident interaction with patients and referrers

  • Strong awareness of infection control, data protection (GDPR), patient confidentiality, and safety protocols

  • Knowledge of ultrasound equipment, maintenance procedures, and safe use protocols

 

Desirable skills:

  • Experience in engagement in audit, research, or quality improvement projects

  • Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF) accreditation in Nuchal Translucency and/or First Trimester Screening

  • Experience working in a fertility clinic (e.g.: follicle tracking, baseline scans, luteal phase assessments)

  • Experience in phlebotomy

  • Evidence of problem solving and decision-making skills

  • Understanding of quality management systems and processes experience supervising students, delivering in-service training, or participating in educational programmes

  • Familiarity with required accreditation standards or other healthcare quality frameworks

  • Experience using RIS/PACS or other electronic reporting and image archiving systems

Key responsibilities

 

  • Deliver autonomous, high-quality ultrasound services in obstetrics, gynaecology, and fertility practice

  • Recognise the ultrasound characteristics of normal and abnormal anatomy, pathology, and physiological variation in female pelvic and fetal structures

  • Vetting referrals for clinical appropriateness, adapting procedures based on individual patient needs and relevant clinical history

  • Ensure safe practice and optimal imaging technique, during early pregnancy, fertility, and intimate procedures

  • Communicate effectively with patients regarding the purpose and nature of the examination, gaining informed consent and offering chaperones in line with local protocol

  • Accurately document and report ultrasound findings, ensuring clarity, timeliness, and alignment with Merrion Ultrasound’s clinical pathways

  • Identify urgent or unexpected findings and escalate these promptly to relevant clinicians in accordance with local protocols

  • Participate in quality assurance audits, peer reviews, and ongoing evaluation of clinical practice in line with accreditation requirements and HSE guidance

  • Support the induction, training, and mentorship of new or junior sonographers, students, and visiting staff, ensuring high clinical standards
